Dae Minhwoo was born in Little Seoul, Los Santos, to a middle-class Korean family. From the outside, his childhood looked pretty normal. His father working as Corporate Income Tax office worker, while his mother spent most of her time trying to keep the family together. The problem was that the family had been falling apart for years. Arguments became common, trust slowly disappeared, and neither parent wanted to fully give up on the marriage. Instead of separating, they kept trying to make things work, dragging Minhwoo back and forth between Gangnam and Los Santos whenever another disagreement changed their plans. As a result, Minhwoo never truly settled anywhere. Some years were spent in Korea, others in Little Seoul. Every time he started getting comfortable, another family issue would send him back to Gangnam. 

 

The only thing that stayed consistent was his fascination with Korean street-culture. Minhwoo became obsessed with stories about kkangpae (깡패) and Jojik-Poklyeokbae (조직폭력배). It started as simple as escape lullaby or comfort-zone for him. He spent hours watching old Korean crime documentary or television dramas about the rise of organized crime groups in South Korea like it's a part of his identity, similar to an Italian back in the day.—in Little Seoul, there's a story about old-street tales neighborhood, he would sit quietly and listen to older Koreans talk about the streets, riot, old neighborhoods, and people who had built reputations long before his generation was born. The more he listened, the more he became attached to the ideas behind those stories. It was never really about violence or easy money. What caught his attention was the sense of uiri (의리), loyalty between people who stood by each other regardless of circumstances. To Minhwoo, those stories are somewhat cool for young-kid like him, especially he was growing up as neglect child. In his mind, the brotherhood he heard about in stories of old kkangpae (깡패) felt stronger and more genuine than anything he had experienced himself.

 

Minhwoo started seeing himself through those stories, even if he had never truly lived them. Some people would later say he had a romanticized the view of the world he admired, even deep down, Minhwoo would be thinking "maybe they were right". Minhwoo often focused on the sweet thing while ignoring the ugly realities that came with them. Every story about a Hyungnim (형님) looking after his people, or the great era of The Chilsung-pa (칠성파), or Seven Star Mob in Korea underworld seemed to fill a gap he had carried since childhood. As he grew up, those ideas stopped being just stories. Minhwoo had already lost interest in the idea of a normal life like the most of people do. Spending decades working the same job and following the same routine felt empty to him. Even though, he was never involved in illegal activities during his time in Los Santos, but he couldn't deny the interest he felt toward the crew on Little Seoul's residents, Beomnyeon (범년). Now in his early twenties, he spends most of his time around Little Seoul, trying to become part of something bigger than himself, Minhwoo no longer sees Beomnyeon (범년) as just another neighborhood crew. To him, they represent a path he has been quietly walking toward for years.
