His mother was a quiet but hard-working nurse, and his father was a mechanic. Both his parents were second-generation immigrants. They lived in a small, densely populated village, Jax’s neighbourhood was a place of graffiti, old boarded-up shops, and young children wandering around like vagrants. Jax’s room in his small flat was covered in old posters of bikes, bands, and cafes. On quiet nights, his father would talk about the Ace Café as if it were a holy place. A shrine to rebellion, freedom, and rubber. They would play vinyl records and tell stories of riders who once competed for thrills and pride, not fame or fortune. Jax’s father said, “We ride to feel alive and free, not to avoid death.” But London was not designed for idealists in the early 2000s. At school, Jax was lost. He was too intelligent to be interested in fitting in with what seemed like a rigged system. In the alley behind his father’s garage, Jax put together a beat-up Yamaha using parts he found in a junkyard while the others studied for exams. He had dropped out of college at seventeen. He had worked various jobs, including a delivery boy, a night shift at a petrol station, and a kitchen boy at a pub with no prospects. It was the solitude he hated, not the work. The routine. The belief that routine and repetition were all life had to offer. One night, when he heard the sound of an engine echoing through the industrial back streets near the River Thames, he went to the sound and everything changed. Young people gathered around vintage motorbikes, rockabilly music poured from someone’s Bluetooth speaker, jackets were patched up, and there was a lot of laughter as he met an unexpected person. He had never met Dominic before. Dominic rode a Triumph Trident. He rode it because it made sense in a world that didn’t make sense, and he wasn’t trying to impress anyone. Jax found himself in that. It was a search, not a recklessness. A need for something more. It took time to manifest. He wasn’t a rebel who wore only leather jackets. But Jax began spending more time with the group. He discovered the unspoken rules—about “ton,” about respect, about riding for the soul, not just speed. Sure, he built his first real cafe racer out of a beat-up Honda CB750 that no one else thought was worth keeping. But that was all Jax. He found value in the things other people threw away. He was no longer marginalized by 2012. He was a member of the Ton-Up Reapers, a new wave of contemporary rock musicians who were reviving the Ace Café and revitalizing some of London’s lesser-known neighborhoods. They were just riders with nothing to prove but everything to feel, not criminals or troublemakers. He had found his tribe. He heard a voice in the roar of his engine. He found purpose in a world that was trying to take him. But London was growing fast. Rebels were no longer welcome in the world. What about Jax? He kept dreaming. He kept believing in the fire. The next chapter in his life begins when a letter from Los Santos arrives.
