Sixties; Gary Popkin getting a pat-down from San Francisco's finest. Gary started out in Frisco then transferred to Oakland were he became Oakland Vice President in the seventies. I met Gary in 1977 shortly after Los Angeles Hells Angels President Ray Glore had been murdered it was a tough year for LACO. I was in Bay Area with Animal, Sonny, had just returned from Folsom Prison. Sir Gay Walton and Gary were running Oakland. There soon would be a power struggle for control of the clubs most powerful charter.

Animal told me Gary wanted to talk to me. Keep in mind things had been tense between the two charters. When we got to Gary's house Animal opened a door after we entered the house and said he's in the basement the walk down the stairs was long.

Was I scared, no let's just say cautious. The basement room was a incredible museum of Hells Angels History. Gary sat behind an oversized desk. The conversation was relaxed, but serious. It was like two older brothers looking out for their younger sibling.
