Eager to retaliate and even faster to hit, Cassius was determined to show he was not little, not unseen, not weak. The desire for approval gradually formed his sense of self. He pursued praise through assertion, standing, and fear, as it seemed scarce. Older boys in the area observed his anger and his desire to fit in. They presented him with something he had consistently desired, acknowledgment. Running errands evolved into watching intersections, and watching intersections morphed into taking part in transactions he hardly comprehended. Every impulsive choice seemed to signify advancement back then. Having money in his pocket signified he was no longer the powerless child hearing his parents fight. Regard on the streets seemed more concrete than any scholarly success. However, underneath the confidence, uncertainty remained. Each insult pierced more profoundly than he acknowledged, every defeat seemed disastrous, and every offense called for revenge. Still, Cassius was not without depth. Beneath the hardened exterior lived a sharp observer who understood power dynamics instinctively. He could read intention in tone, posture, and hesitation. A part of him quietly longed for stability, for a life where survival was not a daily contest. But vulnerability felt dangerous, so he buried it under pride and aggression. Now standing at the edge of adulthood, Cassius faces a defining tension. He can continue down a path fueled by anger and impulse, or confront the wounds that shaped him and risk becoming something greater than the environment that raised him.
