    The first time Mike got arrested, he was 14, then it was July 16, 2011, three days after his birthday, and he'd been trying to steal a bike outside the bodega on 112th Street. His mom, rosa, worked the overnight shift at Mercy Hospital cleaning rooms, his dad had bounced when Mike was six, and his older brother Javier was already doing two years upstate. The cop who cuffed him sighed more than yelled, said something about wasted potential that Mike would hear a dozen more times before he turned 18. He kept the arrest slip folded in his back pocket for weeks, showed it to kids at school like it was a trophy. Everything changed when Javier got shanked in the yard at Green Haven. March 2015, a Tuesday. Mike remembered the phone ringing at 3 AM, his mother's scream like glass breaking.

    "They killed my boy," she kept saying, rocking back and forth in that same kitchen chair where she'd waited up for Javier every night he'd been out running the streets. Mike buried his brother in a suit two sizes too big because it was all they could afford (not that anyone asked), then spent the next six months hunting down the guy who did it.Found him outside a liquor store in the Bronx, gun in his waistband, finger on the trigger.. That was just how it went. And walked away. Javier's voice in his head: "You ain't built for this, little brother. " He started over in Queens with a fake ID and a job washing dishes at Sal's Diner.

    That much was clear. Met a waitress named Elena who laughed at his dumb jokes and didn't ask about the scar above his eyebrow. For two years, he almost believed he could go straight, until some guys from the old neighborhood recognized him and smashed up Sal's place looking for protection money. Elena quit the next day, left a note saying she couldn't do this again. Mike spent that winter sleeping on his cousin Rico's couch, delivering weed for Rico's connect to pay rent. Got busted twice, did 90 days, came out with a GED handbook someone left in the rec room. Now at 26, mike runs a legit moving company by day and still does the occasional "special delivery" at night when Rico calls..

    He keeps a photo of Javier taped to his dashboard, eats the same egg sandwich every morning from the cart on 34th, and texts his mom every Sunday without fail. The guys on the block respect him because he never snitched, the cops leave him alone because he's small-time now, and the new kids don't know his name. Some nights he drives past Elena's old apartment, slows down but never stops. That much was clear. His hands still shake sometimes when he hears sirens. Or so it seemed.
