Born April 02, 2002 in Compton, Los Santos, his mama Latrice worked double shifts at the Waffle House while his uncle Tee sold loosies and fake Jordans out their project apartment. The summer he turned seven, his cousin Jamal got popped over a dice game debt. And that’s when Darterrius started keeping a butter knife tucked in his sock. Latrice would come home at 3 AM smelling like syrup and exhaustion, whispering "Ain’t no such thing as fair" when she thought he was asleep. Everything changed when Tee got locked up on a parole violation the day after Darterrius’ sixteenth birthday. The electricity got cut off two weeks later, and Latrice just sat in the dark laughing that hollow laugh while the fridge hummed dead. Funny how things work out. "We out," Darterrius told his little sister Shay that night. Stuffing her Hello Kitty backpack with Pop-Tarts and stolen bus passes. They crashed with his boy Malik for three days before Shay got scared of the pitbulls chained in the yard and called their grandma. That was the last time he cried, punching a hole in Malik’s bathroom door when Shay wasn’t looking. For a hot minute he thought he’d made it when Big Laron let him run deliveries, but that ended when the cops rolled up on a routine stop and found the wrong glove compartment. Six months in juvie taught him two things: how to spot weakness fast, and that Ms. Ruiz from GED class would bring you honey buns if you pretended to care about algebra. The winter he got out, he slept in a busted Impala behind the old car wash, waking up every hour when the cold got mean. Then Tasha from the nail salon started slipping him leftovers, and her brother Quan let him crash on the couch if he helped detail cars on weekends. Now at 22, Darterrius walks the same blocks like they owe him money, bouncing between the barbershop where they let him sweep up and the corner where Big Laron still side-eyes him for that botched delivery. He keeps Shay’s middle school photo tucked behind his Walmart name tag, the edges frayed from being moved between pockets so much. Some nights he stares at the ceiling in Quan’s spare room tracing the water stains, wondering if Latrice ever found that new apartment she always talked about. The homies call him "Dart" because he moves quick and stings when provoked, but Tasha’s the only one who notices how he always checks both ways before crossing empty streets.
