His parents were both children of Irish immigrants who came to America looking for work. His father spent thirty years working at a meat packing plant while his mother stayed home raising four kids. The Costigan family never had much, but they had each other. Young Grady learned early that if he wanted something, he had to get it himself. He started mowing lawns for neighbors when he was twelve. By fourteen, he was helping an older kid sell sports jerseys that fell off a truck. Nothing serious, just small stuff. But it got him thinking about money in a different way. High school came and went without much excitement for Grady. He graduated but didn't have money for college like some of his friends. He worked odd jobs around town, pumping gas and washing dishes at a diner. But Boston started feeling smaller every year. Too many familiar faces, too much cold weather, too few opportunities. A cousin who moved to California kept sending postcards of palm trees and beaches. Grady saved up for months and bought a one way Greyhound ticket to Los Santos. He showed up with two bags and four hundred dollars in his pocket. The city was huge and loud and nothing like home. He felt lost for the first few weeks. Grady found a room to rent in a older part of the city. The neighborhood wasn't pretty but it was cheap. He got work at a auto body shop, learning to fix cars from a Mexican guy named Jorge. At night he would hang out at a local bar, just watching and listening. He met all kinds of people there. Some were construction workers, some were musicians, some were what his mother would call shady characters. Grady was smart about it. He never asked too many questions and never talked too much about himself. When people needed something, they started coming to him. He kept things small and quiet. No flashy cars or big parties. Just steady work and steady money. Years passed and Grady became a regular face in the neighborhood. People trusted him because he was consistent. He still drives that same old Ford truck and still lives in the same apartment. His dream now is to buy the auto shop from Jorge when the old man retires. Something legal, something solid. A place where he can look at himself in the mirror and feel proud. Grady thinks about Southie sometimes, about the cold winters and his mother's cooking. But Los Santos is home now. It took him in when he had nothing and gave him a chance to build something. He plans to make the most of it.
