His parents, Mexican by origin, had immigrated to the United States in search of a better life. Nicolas Varela was an only child and was brought up in a small apartment in a poor neighborhood. His father was a drug addict and often drank alcohol excessively, which made his parents quarrel with each other over and over again. Although his mother worked late into the night as a housekeeper to support the family's needs, the house was never peaceful. His father was arrested when Nicolas Varela was only 15 years old for robbing a grocery store and was sentenced to prison. A few months later, the parents also divorced, and the mother got full custody. After the divorce, Nicolas Varela's life transformed drastically. His mother worked even more than before, often getting herself two jobs in order to make ends meet. He leaves early in the morning and comes back late at night, exhausted. With no siblings and spending hardly any time with his mother, Nicolas Varela felt lonelier than ever. He was losing the love and attention he enjoyed before as a younger child. The loneliness slowly turned into sadness, and he would sit silently in his room questioning what he had done to deserve such an experience. School did him no good, either; he didn't feel he belonged anywhere. No one noticed him. Nicolas Varela ended up hanging out with some of the older boys in his neighborhood. They were bad influences, but they embraced him like family, something he had not known. This street gang gave him the sense of belonging and freedom he so desperately craved. Nicolas Varela began to spend more time with them, doing small chores and earning instant cash. It was exciting and freeing, very much unlike the cold silence at home. Nicolas Varela secretly craves affection and attention, but for now, he chooses life on the streets; perhaps Nicolas Varela expects that they will give him a life he can no longer have at home.
