Barnes had been off the grid for a while. Not because he felt guilty, but because the whole operation fell apart. His contacts vanished and the phones went silent. Left with nothing but an old van and fading instincts, he spent his days cruising aimlessly through the city taking whatever small job came his way. Gas was low, food was scarce, and the buzz from the streets was gone. Nights were filled with empty roads and static on the radio. He told himself it was temporary, but deep down he knew the streets don’t hand out second chances for free.

Then someone showed up. No name, no history, just a quick offer. A few runs, same product, good money. Barnes didn't ask questions. He needed the work. The van came alive again. His hands remembered every shortcut, every blind turn. The first few drops went down smooth. No tails, no heat, just clean runs and quick cash. For the first time in weeks, he felt like he mattered again. But the job always comes with a price. The final run took him far past familiar turf. A dark industrial block with no lights and no sound. Before he could react, a big problem cut in front and two bikes boxed him in from behind. Doors swung open and the cold metal of a pistol met his ribs before he could move.

They dragged him out and took everything. Barnes tried to talk his way out, offered cash, silence, even loyalty. One of them stared for a second, then fired. No warning, no last words. His body dropped flat on the pavement. The van was left idling with its doors wide open. The night swallowed him. No sirens came. No one cared. By sunrise he was just another ghost the city forgot.
