Sacrificing his teenage life for hustle, he worked so many stints to at least have some pennies in his pocket. La Puma began to work at a vinyl store in Washington Park and almost gave up on school to pursue his uncertain career. Despite of being so poor, his knee-deep love for urban contemporary culture shaped his soul and navigated his path toward hip-hop and R&B music. From an interview with Complex News, La Puma stated that as a white person, he thought it was wonderful to make music where it’s only accustomed for black people. Like Stargate, he broke the stigma of having only black producers to make music for black artists. He was born in 1988 at a hospital around Washington Park, Chicago, Illinois, while being the only child in the marriage of Charles and Marianne La Puma. Having his father working as an underpaid factory worker made Jacob fight more than most kids of his age. His mother was working maid in one of the fanciest districts in River North. But still, they couldn’t keep up with the bills that got higher over time. Not really acing tests and exams at school, he was a purely gifted pianist. And again, music did it. A profound interest in the urban contemporary music was sculpted by his environment, the Chicago ghetto environment, which made him go crazy for an Atlanta rap group that was the trendsetter in the 90s hip-hop scenery. The group was called Outkast. La Puma began his music career in the mid 2000s, at an independent label in Washington Park as a substitute music producer. In hope he could have a place in the major league that he was aching for, he honed his skills in music DAWs, especially Logic Pro. La Puma didn’t know exactly what a perfect mix was going to be, but he surely knew how a good beat sounded like. Five beats were used by the label artists and one of the songs became an overnight sensation in Chicago. Timothy Mosley, or commonly goes by the moniker of Timbaland, flew from LS to Chicago to meet La Puma in person. The pivotal change had made La Puma’s life turn upside down (but in a good way). Blackground Records was where Timbaland put La Puma into and he eventually signed with the label as a producer. Upon his journey to the top, La Puma worked with various artists, composers, top-liners and songwriters such as Ne-Yo, Missy Elliot, Ester Dean, Fabulous, Tamia, Lil Jon, Stargate, and an R&B phenomenon at the time, Rihanna. After five years in the industry, La Puma stepped off and decided to eschew the producer seat for A&R. After the contract with Blackground wore off, La Puma took a flight to New York City the following day and signed with RCA Records as an A&R for nearly ten years. In an interview with Hypebeast Magazine, he admitted that he was better off working A&R for the rest of his life, whether it’s at a label, or a music publisher. Jacob La Puma is now a senior A&R of White Wing Music Publishing in Los Santos, San Andreas.
