As her name suggests, she is fully American, with no trace of foreign ancestry. When Aileen was a teenager, she went to Artesia High School with Anya Kirilenko. Aileen is still very young she just graduated from Artesia High School last year. A few weeks ago, she went looking for a new home around Crenshaw. After taking care of everything, she decided to walk around the neighborhood. To her surprise, she ran into Anya Kirilenko, her old friend from school. It had been months since they last spoke, but the familiarity between them hadn’t faded. Anya was just as Aileen remembered sharp, observant, and effortlessly charming. They greeted each other with laughter and a touch of disbelief, standing awkwardly for a moment before deciding to sit down on a nearby park bench, right next to a children’s playground. They spoke about school memories, what they had been up to since graduation, and the odd feeling of stepping into adulthood. The playground might have been meant for children, but for Aileen and Anya, it became the backdrop for rediscovering a long-lost connection. Later that evening, Aileen was walking home from a small market just across the street. As she got closer to her building, she noticed a group of people near an alley. The alley was dim, with broken streetlights and cars parked along the sides. She slowed her steps, something about the scene made her uneasy. She stopped by a closed shop and stood quietly. From there, she could see the group more clearly. Some of them looked familiar—people she knew from Artesia. Anya Kirilenko was there too. Across the street, the air felt tense, like something bad was about to happen. The Artesia group looked nervous. Standing in front of them were a few boys from Fort Benton. Aileen remembered them well. They always acted tough, always looking for trouble. Suddenly, the fight began. There was no warning. One of the boys pushed someone, and then the punches started. It happened fast—no talking, just hitting. Aileen froze. Her heart was beating fast. Another boy hit someone hard in the side. It was loud and messy—shouts, bodies falling, the sound of fists hitting. A car passed by, but didn’t stop. Aileen didn’t move. She stayed on the other side of the road, watching from the shadows, holding her grocery bag tight. Her body stayed still, but inside, everything felt loud and heavy. Still, Aileen didn’t move. She remained on the opposite side of the street, wrapped in the hush of night, her hands cold around the bag of groceries she no longer remembered holding.
