     Florence Avenue was burning—not from the sun, but from the gunfights echoing through the narrow alleys. Anello Perez, a Veterano in his gang, sat on a cracked concrete bench in front of his grandmother’s house, taking a drag from a half-burnt Marlboro. On his arm, a tattoo of La Virgen de Guadalupe stood firm between bullet scars. On the worn-out wooden table beside him, a half-empty bottle of Olde English sat next to a freshly cleaned Glock 17. From inside the house, Vicente Fernández's voice carried through the walls, singing "Volver, Volver," a song that reminded him of those who were already gone—El Toro, Weasel, Little Puppet—names now only seen on the Día de Los Muertos altars in the backstreets.

     Anello didn’t like how the youngsters were starting to lose their código de la calle. They spent more time wrapped up in cheap Instagram talk, caring more about likes and comments than honor and respect. Back in his day, joining F13 meant being ready to die—now, some of these kids were more focused on selling fentanyl for the Jalisco Cartel than actually holding down their block. Even worse, rumors were spreading that some of them were playing both sides, working for Sureños and their enemies at the same time.

     One night, at the corner of Florence and Hooper, Anello waited with two homies—Lil Jinx and Sleepy. In front of them, a youngster called Baby Slice stood with his hands tied behind his back. Ghost didn’t say much. He simply unwrapped a tortilla and pulled out a taco de lengua—a clear warning in their world. "You talk too much, homie." Baby Slice struggled, but there was nothing he could do. Two quiet shots from Anello’s pistol ended it. He closed his eyes for a moment, whispering, "Lo siento, morro."

Despite the violence, Anello still held onto tradition. Every time a homie died, he made sure to attend their funeral, placing marigold flowers on the fresh soil. He still went to the Lowrider Showdowns at Elysian Park, standing beside his ’64 Chevy Impala, listening to oldies from Thee Midniters, Brenton Wood, and sometimes even Kid Frost when nostalgia hit. As long as he was still on Florence Avenue, as long as he could still see the Santa Muerte mural on the liquor store’s back wall, he would make sure the gang would survive—no matter what it took.
