Kobayashi Ken, better known as Kenji, is a 39-year-old American citizen. He was born on February 25, 1986 in San Fierro, Japantown. Since childhood, Kenji was often bullied due to his different race from his peers, but he took advantage of his family's rich economy to seek refuge with his “stronger” friends. This is why Kenji has a special ability to negotiate with his interlocutors and also utilize loopholes to get in and take advantage. Being born rich also gave Kenji a love of money and power, as he wanted to continue his family's wealth with his father being a nightclub owner. His father, Kobayashi Yukio is a nightclub owner in San Fierro, Japantown, which is known for its association with the Yakuza of the Tatsuyuki-kai clan.

However, one day, the nightclub business run by Kobayashi Yukio had to go bankrupt caused by a raid from the Yakuza of Tatsuyuki-kai's enemies, Odawara-gumi, Kobayashi Yukio was also killed on the spot due to being shot dead right in the head, the nightclub caught fire that night. Kobayashi Ken, Kenji, became an orphan who had to live with his mother, Takahisa Ito who was a family member of the Takahisa clan, a sub-clan of Tatsuyuki-kai. Kenji has been a hard worker since childhood, utilizing his father's relationship with Kenji's adopted uncle Robert Adachi who is the Wakagashira of Tatsuyuki-kai to educate and teach the values of the Yakuza code of ethics to Kenji. Kenji has matured to be hired as a soldier from Tatsuyuki-kai.

All these years he has lived, it doesn't feel like he has lived his days as a Yakuza member, especially since he was appointed Shateigashira of the Los Santos branch of the Tatsuyuki-kai clan. Flashback, Kenji was sent by Ienaga-sama to fly to Los Santos and set up his crew to make more money for the Los Santos branch of Tatsuyuki-kai. Experience after experience has been gained, working rough, as well as negotiating on white paper and black ink has been done for decades. A turning point occurred where Tatsuyuki-kai was hunted down by the FBI and Interpol, forcing Ienaga Hoshi to flee the United States and tell his men to split up. However, Kenji said otherwise, Kenji stayed in Los Santos and would face his destiny.
