Deshawn Poole was born and raised in the roughest part of the city, where rundown buildings with cracked paint lined the streets, trash piled up in alleyways, and sirens screamed louder than kids' laughter. Since he was a kid, he learned to fall asleep to the sound of distant gunshots or neighbors wailin’ over whatever they lost—wallets, cars, or loved ones. His mama, a hustler in her own way, juggled two jobs just to put food on the table for him and his little brother. His pops? Never in the picture. Gone before Deshawn was old enough to remember. With no father figure and a world that didn’t give a damn, he had to learn real quick how to survive.

By the time he hit his teenage years, the streets had already sunk their claws into him. The homies he ran with were just like him—broke, angry, and lookin’ for somethin’ real to hold onto. He started doin’ small-time jobs for the local gang, runnin’ packages, makin’ drops, never askin’ questions. School was never a priority, even though his mama begged him to stay in and find a way out. But to Deshawn, leavin’ the hood was just a dream, somethin’ that only happened in movies. The streets made him feel like somebody, gave him respect, made sure nobody looked down on him.

Now, at 18, Deshawn stands at a crossroads. He’s seen too many of his boys get locked up or gunned down, their lives cut short before they even had a chance. A part of him wants out, wants to keep the promise he made to his mama, to build somethin’ real for himself. But the streets don’t let go easy. Loyalty runs deep, and once you in, it’s damn near impossible to walk away clean. In Deshawn’s world, one decision can be the difference between livin’ or dyin’. And time is runnin’ out for him to make that choice.
