He came from nothing—his mother worked tirelessly in a run-down apartment in Memphis, just about scraping by. Luck had been his only friend, helping him survive empty stomachs and street fights. Now, at seventeen, he was in a new city, ready to use that luck to make something of himself—good or bad, who knows? He started small, hustling pool in backroom bars, running errands for people he barely knew, anything to keep cash in his pocket. The city had a way of pulling people in, and before long, Earl found himself in the orbit of men who made money in ways that didn’t require a time clock or a paycheck. He didn’t ask too many questions—he just played along, figuring his luck would carry him through like it always had. That’s how he ended up behind the wheel of a stolen car outside a convenience store, waiting for the kind of job that either made you rich or ruined you. The plan was simple—fast cash, no blood—but luck had other plans. The cashier hesitated, a shot rang out, and Earl’s stomach twisted as his friend sprinted back, cursing. “Drive!” he barked, his voice rough. Earl’s hands shook as he slammed the gas, tires screeching as sirens wailed in the distance. His mind raced—this wasn’t what he had signed up for. The city that once seemed full of promise now felt like it was swallowing him whole, and for the first time, luck didn’t seem like something he could count on. That night, he sat in a rundown motel, staring at the bloodstained money in his lap. Back home, his mum had always said luck wasn’t real—it was just an excuse for bad choices, but maybe she was right. Maybe Los Santos wasn’t about luck at all, but about who he was willing to become. He had made his first real choice, and now, he would have to live with it. As the city lights flickered through the blinds, Earl realised he had another decision to make—before luck made it for him.
