His mother worked double shifts at a garment factory, and his father had vanished years ago, leaving only whispers of his name. With no role models except the older homies on the block, Lorend was drawn to the life fast cash, respect, and the thrill of the unknown. He wasn’t the loudest or the strongest, but he had heart, and in a place where weakness got you swallowed, that meant everything. By the time he hit sixteen, Lorend was already running small errands for the set holding, delivering, watching corners. The older heads saw something in him sharp instincts, a quiet hunger, a mind always working. He didn’t move recklessly, and he never spoke more than he needed to. That’s how he earned his first real task collecting a debt from a rival clique's soldier. It wasn’t supposed to be anything major, just intimidation, maybe a scuffle at worst. But when Lorend found the guy, things escalated fast. One wrong word, one bad move, and suddenly, a knife was in his hand, blood on the pavement. He wasn’t sure if the guy would make it, and for the first time, the weight of the life he was chasing pressed heavy on his chest. That night, back in his cramped apartment, Lorend sat on his bed, staring at his hands. His mom was asleep in the next room, oblivious to the boy she had raised. He thought about the older homies, the ones who told him this was the way. But was it? His heart pounded with the rush, the fear, the power but also something else. Doubt. Lorend had stepped across a line, and now there was no going back. The streets had him now.
