esceptico Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Just wanna say @Esta123, I’ve never done Prison Roleplay here before. But, if anyone's down to dive into this topic a bit, it’s all good to share, right? So, about playing In Prison Roleplay in a real and strict way, I’ll try to answer with some research from a few references I’ve got. Hope it doesn’t kill the vibe when it comes to roleplay needs. The first issue might be the number of players in the prison at one time,[1] and that’s usually the main reason why our prison roleplay doesn’t develop much. Like you said, getting involved and playing as an individual or being part of a structured group inside the prison is super tough, and if it’s done in a non-organic way, it’s gonna kill the fun of the roleplay since it feels fake. Second, we gotta talk about setting up an SAPD faction or its sub-factions as prison guards. This is super crucial for making prison roleplay actually work. It helps keep the prison running smoothly and deals with issues caused by both individual inmates and certain inmate groups. But I get the vibe of this discussion, like, how can a guard roleplay realistically. From some reports I’ve seen online, here’s the general scoop: So, guards are likely to face complex and high-risk situations. Their job involves handling security and interacting with inmates, which means they need a deep understanding of inmate dynamics and criminal groups inside the prison. Surveillance and Monitoring Guards gotta keep a tight watch to stop illegal stuff like drug dealing, violence, and power struggles among inmates. Using CCTV and regular patrols is part of the plan to spot early signs of trouble. Also, guards need to know gang symbols and other identifiers, like tattoos, that show gang affiliations (Corrections1, 2015). Security and Order Enforcement Guards are in charge of enforcing prison rules, including stopping contraband from coming in. They do regular inspections to find weapons, drugs, or hidden communication devices. When things go down, like riots or gang fights, guards need to act fast, often with backup from rapid response teams or special units. Intelligence Gathering Prison guards often work with external law enforcement to gather and share intel on gang activities. This includes monitoring inmate communications, both inside and with outsiders. Law enforcement ops, like those by the Texas Anti-Gang Center, show how intel is used to disrupt criminal networks (Justice.gov). Guards might also do interviews or interrogations to get info about gang activities. Inmate Interaction and Management Guards need solid communication skills to handle inmates who might try to play the system or exploit security gaps. It’s crucial for guards to stay neutral and professional, even when dealing with threats or bribes. Building professional relationships with inmates while maintaining authority is key to keeping order. Personal and Psychological Security Challenges Working in this risky environment puts guards at risk of physical violence. Attacks on guards aren’t rare, so they need to be ready for potential threats at any time. The psychological pressure from working under constant threat is also a big deal. Chronic stress can lead to burnout or PTSD, so psychological support and wellness programs are essential for their mental health (Justice.gov). External Influence and Criminal Networks In-prison gangs often have extensive networks outside the prison that can impact the situation inside. For instance, they might arrange drug or weapon smuggling or plan revenge attacks on guards or other inmates. Guards need to watch out for secret communications between inmates and their outside connections and work with other law enforcement to disrupt these criminal activities (Justice.gov). In short, playing a prison guard in a facility with gang or mafia populations isn’t just about physical security; it also involves a deep understanding of criminal dynamics, intelligence gathering, and strong interpersonal skills. They gotta be ready for physical and mental risks and work with various agencies to ensure security inside and outside the prison.[2][3] So, can SAPD handle this roleplay? I believe in their credibility and ability to dive deep into character roles. But again, the problem might be with the server ecosystem, which, for now, might not fully support this level of detailed and realistic roleplay. Third, since this chat is leaning towards prison gang roleplay, we gotta agree on what exactly a prison gang is. I found a solid guide by @arielnatanael that breaks down what a Prison Gang is and how they operate: Quote “A Prison Gang is a criminal organization that originates and operates within prisons or correctional facilities. These gangs are often racially or ethnically oriented. In the U.S., prison gangs vary in hierarchy and structure, like the highly organized Aryan Brotherhood or the less formal Mexican Mafia (La eMe). They play a big role in drug distribution and are key links between Drug Trafficking Organizations (DTOs), street gangs, and other criminal groups.” It continues: Quote “Prison gangs operate by setting up an organized internal structure within the prison. They have a hierarchy, rules, codes of conduct, and roles for their members. Inmates join these gangs for protection, security, power, or access to resources within the prison. Like other criminal organizations, their main goal is money—lots of it. They’re heavily involved in collecting 'taxes,' drug distribution, and other criminal activities to make cash. Prison gangs usually collect taxes in exchange for protection from threats and access to various resources inside the prison. In reality, calling them just 'Prison Gangs' is kinda outdated. Most of them have grown into large organizations that operate across multiple prisons, controlling the daily lives of inmates under their 'jurisdiction.' Plus, these groups have significant power outside the prison walls, where they often control and tax street crime activities. For example, La eMe controls the 'Surenos,' a Hispanic street gang in Southern California, and Nuestra Familia controls the Northern California area.”[4] And below is a basic rundown of what goes down in prison and how a criminal group might operate. This can be used as a guide for roleplaying as part of a criminal group. Generally speaking, from a gang’s point of view inside prison, daily life is all about flexing power, maintaining control, and keeping the organization going. Here’s a more detailed look at what roleplay might involve: Illegal Economic Control Controlling the illegal economy inside the prison is how gangs fund their operations and keep their power. They run the drug trade, which is one of the most profitable markets in prison. They get drugs through various channels, like smuggling by visitors, corrupt staff, or even drones delivering goods into the prison. Once inside, these goods are sold to other inmates at crazy high prices due to limited supply. Besides drugs, gangs also trade other contraband like cell phones, which are super valuable because they let inmates talk to the outside world without being watched. Phones can be used to run operations outside or coordinate stuff inside. Daily goods like extra food, cigarettes, and hygiene items also become part of this illegal economy. Gangs exploit high demand for these items to make a profit and strengthen their position. Illegal economic control also extends their power by intimidating or controlling other inmates who need access to these goods. They might demand payment in cash, services, or even loyalty. For inmates who can’t pay, the consequences could be violence or social isolation. Violence and Security Violence is a key tool for gangs to enforce discipline and maintain dominance. Gang fights often happen when there's a power struggle or when one gang tries to dominate a particular illegal market. These attacks can lead to serious injuries or even death and often prompt intervention from prison staff or special law enforcement units. Gangs also use violence to maintain internal discipline. Members who break gang rules, try to leave, or are seen as betraying the organization can become targets of violence to set an example. Punishments can range from beatings to murder, depending on the severity of the offense. Violence is also used to intimidate other inmates or even prison staff. Threats of violence can be used to get what they want, like access to goods or services. These threats can also extend to the families of inmates or staff outside the prison, showing just how far the gang's influence reaches. Manipulation and Social Control Gangs often play a central role in managing social life in prison. They act as unofficial leaders, organizing other inmates and making sure their rules and procedures are followed. This can include controlling access to jobs in the prison, food distribution, and other facilities. By controlling access to these key resources, gangs ensure that those who don’t follow their rules face consequences. Gangs also often provide "protection" services. In the harsh prison environment, many inmates feel safer under the wing of a certain gang. In exchange, these inmates might have to pay in cash, goods, or other services. This protection can shield them from violence from other gangs or stronger inmates. Gangs use their influence to affect administrative decisions, like placement in specific blocks or access to special programs. With members or sympathizers in strategic positions, they can manipulate the system for their benefit. This also includes setting up informal justice systems where disputes are settled internally by the gang without involving prison authorities. Restrictive Housing and Rehabilitation Programs Gangs know that isolation or segregation can be used by prison authorities to weaken their organization. However, they often find ways to keep operating from within isolation, like through letters, messages sent via other inmates, or even corrupt staff. For gangs, isolation can be a place to show resilience and strength to other members. Rehabilitation programs meant to help inmates leave gangs are often viewed with skepticism. Gang members who want to exit face major risks, including threats of violence or death from their own gang or rival gangs that see them as a threat or traitor. So, despite programs offering protection and help, many gang members choose to stay involved rather than risk leaving. External Influence and Criminal Networks Prison gangs often have strong connections with criminal networks outside, allowing them to run broader operations. Through contacts outside, they can arrange smuggling of goods like drugs or cell phones into the prison. Communication with the outside world can happen through letters, illegal phone calls, or messages delivered by visitors. These external networks are also crucial for running criminal operations outside the prison. Gangs stay involved in activities like drug trafficking, money laundering, or other organized crimes by using their influence inside the prison to coordinate these activities. In some cases, they might also use threats or violence to sway decisions made by family members of inmates or prison staff outside, like intimidating witnesses or extorting money.[5][6] So, that’s a general overview of how a criminal group operates inside prison. It’s all part of their survival strategy (more accurately, their efforts to maintain their existence within the prison). Next up is about roleplayers wanting to dive into playing a character living day by day as a true inmate. Since In Prison Roleplay still feels kinda murky for a lot of players, creating a detailed or even bustling ecosystem for it seems like a far-off dream. And I think this is a key factor for making In Prison Roleplay work. Maybe the way to tackle this is by gathering folks who share the interest in experiencing a different roleplay vibe on this server by forming a faction or sub-faction focused on inmates. They could get involved in running businesses outside the prison, smuggling goods in and out of the prison, or other gang-like activities just like in real life. It might sound interesting to a small group of people, but is it impossible? Definitely not! When new things start happening consistently, adjustments are bound to follow—both in server features and overall setup. We hope these adjustments will come through, including on JGRP! And the last thing I wanna ask is, when you gonna kick it off? Sorry for how crappy my writing was. Jahaha! Footnotes [1] According to the IC Jail punishment rules on the server, the max jail time for a player’s offenses is only a few hours. This really limits ongoing roleplay. Esta123 Posted July 31, 2024 Author Posted July 31, 2024 I've read it and I like the way you describe it @esceptico 13 hours ago, esceptico said: And the last thing I wanna ask is, when you gonna kick it off? We tried it once before, but it went terribly. And I agree with your opinion. About the prison guard or any sub-faction of the SAPD assigned to guard the prison, we don't put any hopes for that to the server. However, gathering folks who want to experience that roleplay vibe is extremely challenging. 13 hours ago, esceptico said: Maybe the way to tackle this is by gathering folks who share the interest in experiencing a different roleplay vibe on this server by forming a faction or sub-faction focused on inmates.
