In 2022, his mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. For eight months, Andreas skipped the archives course he had just begun in Leeds. He took a portable recorder to the hospital ward, recording every little conversation: his mother reading a cake recipe he had forgotten how to make, her singing a lullaby he couldn't remember hearing. The sound became the only thing keeping him sane as he waited for lab results. When his mother died in March 2023, Andreas stopped eating for a week. He didn't cry at the funeral. He went home, put on his headphones, and played the recording over and over until the recorder's batteries died. All that was left was a 2GB audio file and a house that was suddenly too quiet. Now 23, Andreas runs the "Echo Cellar" not out of a love of history, but out of a fear of forgetting. He accepts tapes and recordings from strangers, restoring nearly destroyed voices without asking for payment. Each time he manages to make the voice of a deceased grandmother, grandfather, or child sound clear again, it feels like delaying death by a few seconds. But the nights are still hard. He often sits at his desk until dawn, listening to his mother's voice say, "Go to sleep, son. Tomorrow will be better," a phrase that never proves true. Andreas knows he can't save his mother.
