Hugh_Sergeyevich Hugh Sergeyevich was born in 1975 in Aberdeen, Washington, D.C., United States. Hugh is the son of Mikail Sergeyevich, who has Russian bloodline, and Camalia, a Native American. His father was an artist and his mother a theater designer. Raised in an artistic household, Hugh loved music from a young age. He began learning guitar, piano, and drums, and eventually started creating his own instrumental works. Hugh also showed an interest in drama while attending The Starway School, where he met Graham Dale. At that time, Hugh and Dale discovered they shared similar musical tastes, prompting Hugh to propose forming a band. At the time, Graham Dale didn’t immediately respond to Hugh’s invitation because he was busy with other things. But eventually, the two of them formed a band called Circus, with an additional member Graham Dale’s friend David Row on drums. Then, in 1997, Hugh changed the band’s name to The Bottleman and recruited a bassist named James Ford to join the band. In the same year, with the original lineup of Hugh Sergeyevich (Frontman), Graham Dale (Guitarist), David Row (Drummer), and James Ford (Bassist), they recorded their first demo titled “There is A Light In Other Way” and performed it at their first gigs in the underground music scene. However, by the end of 1997, David Row stepped down from his position as drummer to pursue his education. Before leaving, David Row recommended his classmate, Dennis Keith. In 1998, The Bottleman with the fixed lineup of Hugh Sergeyevich (Frontman), Graham Dale (Guitarist), Dennis Keith (Drummer), and James Ford (Bassist) embarked on a tour of the underground music scene, hoping to show the public that such great music existed in the underground scene. A month later, The Bottleman successfully caught the attention of a local producer named Jude Monrow. In late 1998, The Bottleman began recording their debut album, titled “Charmless Women,” with local producer Jude Monrow. This proved disappointing due to the public’s lack of interest in the album. Driven by experience and a spirit of movement, Hugh Sergeyevich wrote a set of challenging American-style songs, resulting in “Modern Life Is A Shit” in 1999, which received critical acclaim and fantastic sales. It was an indie rock album with a strong focus on guitar. With the release of that album, The Bottleman signed a contract with Sub Pop. In early 2000, The Bottleman embarked on their first national tour, following their success in the underground scene. The album “Modern Life Is A Shit” had sold 30,000 copies. In 2001, The Bottleman recorded “Villa Bossie” with producer Croocks, a pop version of “Modern Life Is A Shit” that broke away from guitar-focused indie rock. Between 2001 and 2020, The Bottleman released two additional albums, bringing their total to four: “Modern Life Is A Shit”, “Parkdead”, “What’s The Story?” and “The Narcissist” which have collectively sold over 13 million copies. The band was disbanded by frontman Hugh Sergeyevich based on a mutual agreement that they had reached the peak they had long dreamed of, and they all went their separate ways, with The Bottleman officially disbanded.
