Jonah Maskwa grew up on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation in Montana, part of the Chippewa Cree tribe. The name "Maskwa" came from his mother's side of the family, it means "bear" in their old language. His parents were always busy working so it was mostly his grandfather who raised him, teaching him things like hunting, tracking, reading the land, and probably the most important one, staying quiet and just watching before saying anything. That habit never really left him. People sometimes thought he was cold or didn't care much, but really he just didn't talk unless there was a point to it.

 

When he got older he left the reservation to try living in the city, mostly because he wanted to see what else was out there and figured it was time to be on his own. It wasn't easy at first. He bounced around different jobs, some didn't last long, and people would give him weird looks once they figured out where he was from. There were rough nights where money ran low and things felt uncertain, but going back never really crossed his mind. He just kept remembering what his grandfather used to tell him, work hard and don't trust people too fast, not until you actually know them.

 

All that stuff he went through made him even more careful and kept to himself. He'd rather watch how someone acts first before he decides if they're worth trusting, since actions tell more than what people say anyway. Even after being away from the reservation for a long time, he still keeps some old habits, like praying in the morning or holding onto a few things that belonged to his family. To him the name Maskwa isn't just something he was called, it's more like a reminder of where he came from and why he turned out the way he did.
