The rain was coming down hard the night Rudolf Wyman was born, June 25, 2005—the kind of rain that makes car tires hiss on the streets of Los Santos. His mother, Alina, worked the overnight shift at a diner off Route 68, scraping grease off griddles until her hands cracked. His father, Hector, worked in auto body repair whenever he wasn't drinking. There was never enough money, but Rudolf learned early to keep his head down and watch the numbers in the ledger his mother kept by the phone. His little sister, Mary, was the emotional one in the house, crying loudly over scraped knees while Rudolf simply nodded and took out the trash without being asked. He was eight when he started making lists in a black notebook, writing down every car that passed their apartment window. It all came apart when Hector threw a wrench through the living room window one Tuesday in November.

 

The glass shattered right over Rudolf's usual spot on the couch, sending pages of his notebook fluttering to the floor. "This family's a goddamn graveyard," Hector slurred before walking out for good. Alina didn't cry; she simply swept up the glass while Mary wailed. Rudolf picked up his notebook and smoothed the crumpled page where he had been tracking gas prices. That night, lying awake at 3 a.m., he decided on two things: he would never drink, and he would own a decent sedan before he turned twenty. Not that saying it out loud would have changed anything. The next three years were quiet in all the wrong ways.

 

Alina worked double shifts, Mary started sneaking out with boys from school, and Rudolf took weekend jobs detailing cars for old man Ruiz down at the auto yard. He met Lina there, a mechanic's daughter who laughed at his terrible coffee but taught him how to change brake pads. When his notebook filled up, she gave him a new one with "Shut up and write" stamped on the cover. He failed his driver's test twice before passing, his hands sweating on the steering wheel both times. The day after graduation, Ruiz offered him full-time work. However, while standing in that grease-stained bay, Rudolf realized he didn't want to spend his life waiting for other people's cars to break down.

 

Now, at twenty-one, Rudy wakes up at 5:15 every morning without an alarm. He pours yesterday's reheated coffee into a thermos and walks three blocks to the bus stop, where Mrs. Khatri always saves him a seat. The people at the depot know him as the quiet one who fixes spreadsheets no one else can figure out—the guy who still carries that black notebook everywhere. Some nights, he drives Lina's old Corolla to the overlook near Vinewood, leaving the engine idling while he stares at the city lights. That's when the doubt creeps in, and he hears Hector's voice asking what kind of man wastes his life pushing papers. But then his phone buzzes: Mary needs bail money again, and Alina is asking if he's eaten. He writes the amounts in his book, just as he always does.

 

The notebook is almost full again. There's an application folded between pages 43 and 44, one for a mechanic school up north, but every time he pulls it out, something stops him. Maybe it's the way Lina rolls her eyes when he mentions leaving, or the way Alina's hands shake while counting tip money at the diner these days. Maybe it's simpler than that: Los Santos doesn't let go easily. Some nights, he catches himself staring at the wrench mark still etched into the living room wall, wondering if running toward something is just another way of running away.
