     Angel Aguayo was born on July 17th, 2007 in an old clinic known as Angel Pine, a small fishing village at the foothill of the Mount Chiliad. That night Angel turned 19 years old, and GATO (nickname in underground Los Santos art scene) was perched on a rooftop holding a “ZIP Clothing” ad poster above the East Los Santos Freeway, where the sound of engines roared as they raced towards the Mulholland Intersection. In his hand, a 400 ml Montana Black spray paint prepared to make his mark. Angel’s ears consoled with the clack-clack-clack of the mixing ball inside the can, a noise that had accompanied him since he was 8 years old. With a piece of watermelon flavored Hubba Bubba gum that he bought from a 24-hour convenience store, Angel signaled the start of the “fat cap” (NY Fat Cap) spraying motion with a quick flick of his wrist. Without wasting a second, the boy painted a 3D letter “cat’s face cartoon” mask with a wild grin and fangs, and the following “wildstyle” letters in the shape of a pyramid read A.A./GATO. Angel grew up in a two-story Craftsman house built with tin-roof located in Workman Street, East Los Santos; just a few blocks away from the Unity Station freight yards. On top of the 1990s Frigidaire refrigerator of his house an RCA radio played the Ranchera music of Radio X or the Hispanic music radio station Radio Los Santos non-stop.

     His talent - or should we say his “legal trouble” - became apparent at a young age. Angel’s hand seemed to have a mind of its own when it came to leaving graffiti “tags” on any available surface. The high school math book became the canvas for 3D-letter doodles, while his room wooden desk bore compass scratches from teenage angst. Angel even drew a King-Size permanent marker on the back of the family fridge when he was eight years old. While most East LS kids his age got involved with neighborhood gangs such as the Los Santos Vagos or the Ganton Green Families, Angel went his own way. Angel would sneak away from school and take the LS Transit bus downtown to the Arts District/Market area. There, Angel became enthralled with 1970s Chicano muralist artwork by El Grupo and blended it in with 21st-century pop artistic styles and Saturday morning CNT cartoons. The name “El Gato” (The Cat) was not derived from his love of 3D-cat faces graffiti tags, but rather from his acrobatic skills while evading LSPD (Los Santos Police Department) raids. One cold night at 2:15 am in the Commerce district, Angel was making a huge mural on the third-floor façade of a former garment factory next to the City Hall. Suddenly, two LSPD Cruiser patrol cars arrived at the alley behind the building, turned off the siren, and turned on the police car’s red-and-blue spotlights. His life was one of crime and breaking the law, but he had a code. "Don't deface the walls of residences, shops or churches", was his rule of thumb.

     One day in mid-July, Mr. Hector, the owner of Panaderia La Estrella bakery, saw Angel right after she had scribbled on the wall of his shop. Angel noticed him, took off his respirator mask, and, smiling, struck up a conversation with Mr. Hector about warm Conchas, black coffee, and other topics of interest over morning tea. Two days later, Angel shows up at the bakery, permission note in hand, Mr. Hector’s permission note in hand, and under a punishing Los Santos sun, Angel paints an enormous Pan Dulce mural on the previously “written” wall in contrast to the usual orange-and-purple sunsets over the Santa Maria Beach. Angel works at the clothing store Sublimation Nation, screen printing manually, on the side in Silver Lake on the Sunset Boulevard, just across from the Rodeo border. He buys Montana and Loop spray paints at his local art supply store here in Willowfield, along with dozens of different nozzles and caps (from Astro Fat for filling large surfaces to Skinny Banana for fine lines), and a pair of black-and-white Vans Old Skool skateboarding shoes.
