The smell of fried onions still takes Alix back to that tiny kitchen in Bandung. It was July 1998, when his mother, Lina, would make mie goreng at 5:00 AM before leaving for her shift at the textile factory. He was born on March 12, 1999, the third child between two sisters, Rina and Sari, in a house where the walls were thin enough to hear every argument about money. His father, Edo, drove a bajaj for twelve hours a day, coming home with oil stains on his shirt and a silence that weighed more than the coins in his pocket. Alix learned early that hands were meant for working, not complaining, watching his parents trade sleep for extra shifts while the neighbors bought new motorbikes. Everything changed when Edo came home one Tuesday in 2013, his face as gray as the rain outside, saying the doctor had diagnosed him with liver failure. "We can't afford the medicine," Lina whispered that night, her fingers gripping the edge of the sink so tightly that her knuckles turned white.

 

Fourteen-year-old Alix started skipping school the following week, joining his uncle Dodi at construction sites where he earned half wages for carrying bricks until his shoulders bled. The funeral cost three months' salary, and somewhere between the debt collectors arriving and his sisters dropping out of school to work at the market, he stopped believing in things like luck or fairness. By the time he was eighteen, Alix could lay tiles faster than any man twice his age, saving enough money to rent a small room near the train tracks where the constant noise kept him from dreaming. Life works that way sometimes.

 

He met Tono at a worksite in 2020 (or so the story goes), a welder with a laugh like a busted radio who taught him how to drink arak without coughing. They pooled their money to buy a used motorcycle, only to lose it when a client refused to pay for a completed bathroom project the following year. Now he wakes up at 4:30 AM, just as he always has, rides the same route to the same jobs, and returns home to the same silence. Sometimes he buys a pack of kreteks and sits on the curb, watching the smoke curl toward the streetlights, wondering if his father ever did the same.
