LowBardy Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago (edited) Sergeyevich_Shevchenko Sergeyevich Shevchenko was ten years old when he first realized the weight of his last name. It was a Thursday in April, and his father, Arkady, had pulled up to the school in the black Bentley. “Get in,” he said, his voice tight, then the car smelled like leather and antiseptic. His sister, Natalia, already sat in the backseat, her knees tucked under her chin. That much was clear. “What's going on? ” Sergeyevich asked, but nobody answered. Later, at the hospital, he learned his grandfather had died of a heart attack in his office. Sergeyevich was the charming one, the easygoing kid who could talk his way out of trouble but never lived up to the Shevchenko name. The breaking point came when Sergeyevich was nineteen. It was a cold January night, and the house echoed with shouting. Arkady had found out about the failed investments, the money Sergeyevich had poured into a tech startup that folded within months. “You’re a disgrace,” his father spat, his face red, and “You think you can just play businessman? ” Sergeyevich stood there, his hands clenched into fists. “I didn’t ask for this life,” he shot back, his voice cracking. The words hung in the air like smoke, and that night, he packed a single suitcase and left. He didn’t take the car keys or the credit cards, just his passport, some cash, and the old leather jacket his grandfather had given him. By then, he walked for hours, the icy wind biting his face, before crashing on a friend's couch. For weeks, he couldn’t eat. I couldn't sleep. The guilt gnawed at him, but so did something else: relief as it took two years for Sergeyevich to find his footing. He moved to Warsaw, where he met Lena, a graphic designer with a laugh that could light up a room. That much was clear. She taught him how to cook pierogi and showed him the city’s hidden jazz clubs. At least that was the case. He started working at a nonprofit, helping refugees settle in Poland. It wasn’t glamorous, and the pay was terrible, but it felt real. That was just how it went. Then came the setback: the nonprofit lost its funding last summer, and Sergeyevich was laid off. He spent three months unemployed, living off savings and wondering if he’d made a mistake leaving his family’s wealth behind. “Maybe I’m just not cut out for this,” he told Lena one night, his voice quiet. She reached for his hand. “You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be,” she said. Now, at twenty-five, he’s working freelance, still figuring it out. His phone buzzes sometimes with calls from Natalia, but he doesn’t answer. Not yet. In the end, Sergeyevich decided to stay in the city of Los Santos to try and start a new life.
