Born and raised in the shadow of justice, Jang Gunwoo has never known want in his life. He is the only son of a couple of law enforcement officers with an impeccable reputation in South Korea. His father, Jang Kyungwoo, is a veteran detective with sharp instincts who is highly respected within the police force, whilst his mother, Chae Minji, is a public prosecutor with an undeniable track record of victories in court. Growing up in a family that was extremely well off both financially and in terms of social status, Gunwoo’s life was always surrounded by the finest amenities, a first-class education and very strict rules. From a young age, he was raised in a structured, safe environment, shielded from the harsh realities of the streets. To many, his life is one of absolute perfection, the very stuff of dreams. However, behind all that luxury and proactive protection, Gunwoo often feels as though his life is a script neatly written by his parents, leaving him constantly on the lookout for a glimmer of freedom to break free from his tedious routine.

 

He finally found that glimmer of freedom when Gunwoo had just started secondary school. At such a young age, in the midst of the turbulent search for his identity, he unexpectedly fell in love and began a relationship with a girl five years his senior. This relationship, of course, was kept strictly secret from his highly perfectionist and conservative parents. For Gunwoo, this girl was not merely a puppy love or a form of teenage rebellion; she was a window onto the real outside world. Her maturity, her way of speaking, and her broad perspective brought a new dimension to his life that Gunwoo had never experienced before. However, the love story that coloured his teenage years came to an abrupt end when she suddenly vanished from his life without a proper farewell, leaving Gunwoo in a state of confusion and deep heartbreak.

 

The years passed, and Gunwoo successfully completed his secondary education with excellent grades, living up to his family’s high expectations. Although he faced a guaranteed bright future in Korea, Gunwoo’s thoughts never truly strayed from his past. For years, he had quietly utilised the analytical instincts and deductive skills he’d inherited from his father to track down his first love. After a long, secret search, a crucial clue finally led Gunwoo to one definitive conclusion, the girl had moved and settled across the ocean, specifically in the city of Los Santos. This fact proved to be the turning point that put an end to his doubts, yet he knew his parents would never allow him to go abroad without a logical, prestigious reason that would benefit his future.

 

Realising this, Gunwoo devised a perfect plan. He used his outstanding academic achievements to apply to a leading university in Los Santos and was successfully accepted. In the eyes of his parents, Gunwoo’s departure for the United States was purely to continue his education at university level in pursuit of a degree and a better future. They saw off their pride and joy with great pride and high hopes. However, behind the façade of an exemplary student abroad, Gunwoo harboured a great secret and another motive that was his primary driving force to pursue his first love. Now, armed with his intelligence, analytical instincts and academic status as a shield, Gunwoo begins a new chapter in Los Santos. By day, he is an ordinary student attending lectures, but beyond that, he is ready to explore every corner of this harsh and enigmatic metropolis in order to rediscover the one person who once made his life feel complete.
