  Shawn lived a comfortable life; his home had marble floors and air conditioning that kept the rooms cool all the time. He was seventeen years old.His parents wanted him to be a high achiever, so he acted like a homebody who never went out. If he did leave the house, he made sure to come back before 10:00 PM. He spent most of his time reading and studying.However, Shawn often felt bored by how his parents treated him.He would often sneak out through his bedroom window to experience the outside world. He would jump down and go to the dark, empty alleys where the neighborhood troublemakers spent their time laughing and hanging out.He knew they were a group known for causing trouble in the area, and his parents were worried he might get involved with them.

 

  At first, Shawn was very nervous when he joined them. He didn't understand their secret language, nor was he used to the swearing and insults that came naturally to them.But over time, everything became normal to him.He got used to the secondhand smoke from their cigarettes and would even try smoking the ones they offered, even though he actually hated the taste.Eventually, he was no longer the obedient, quiet son he had once been.

 

  Shawn would always come home early in the morning, sneaking back in through his bedroom window. He always felt happy after spending time with the kids in the alley.Sometimes, his parents noticed the smell of tobacco on his clothes.For Shawn, hanging out with that group wasn't just about finding his identity; it was a way to rebel against the way his parents had kept him confined to his room, stopping him from enjoying the real life that was out there.
