Kendrick Okoye was an efficient debt collector. Being disciplined meant that Okoye was always punctual. Okoye worked for a local debt collection agency that had recently started feeling market pressure from competitors from abroad. These competitors were aggressive and were also well funded. For those in the debt collection profession, these sorts of challenges should have been the only thing to concern them, but now the nature of competition was changing. That night, Kendrick was given a new case. He was prompted to visit a debtor who was very late in making their payment, and even at that hour of the night, he was expected to visit this case.

Placing a debt collection call would not have been possible in a case like this. Kendrick Okoye had to make sure the address was accurate. He had no choice but to take the old and dilapidated house case to the collection agency’s front porch and knock on the door. He was certain of the address but had no answer, not the first knock, or the second loud knock, or even the attempt of the violent battle he waged against the door. The obstruction was a very dark house, and Kendrick Okoye now had no choice but to take his overaggressive collection call to the window, which yielded no answer. He had very few options remaining. He had to call the number that was supposed to be the case debtor’s, but to his surprise, the line was dead. In all his years in collection, he had never been so sure of anything, but in that moment, he was. He was fairly certain the address was either intentionally incorrect or completely outdated. In either situation, he was dead sure that there was no case debtor waiting to respond to him.

Just as he was about to leave, the situation shifted in a more concerning direction. Two men, dressed all in black and with their faces hidden, appeared from the side of the house. One of the men pretended to shout and act as a robber telling Kendrick to hand over his valuables. Kendrick was able to recognize the attempt at staging an overly-exaggerated crime scenario. This was the factor that allowed Kendrick to know that something was wrong. They did not appear to be random, run of the mill, criminals. They were performing a scene.

Kendrick was aware that this wasn't a genuine theft, but rather arranged to conceal something more nuanced. It was an immediate situation that he had to respond or flee from. Two assailants closed in, tying him off with their coordinated movements. It was a bloody and determined fight that took place in just ten minutes. Subsequently, the two men went back into the darkness, leaving the scene reconstructed to look like an ordinary street robbery. Prior to the end, Kendrick had already grasped the truth. This wasn't a robbery. It was a deliberate execution disguised as one.
