Sylvester Shevchenko was born on November 12, 1997, in a penthouse overlooking Central Park, the kind of place where the marble floors echoed with every step his tiny socked feet took. His mother, Natalia, ran a hedge fund while his father, Dmitri, owned three Michelin-starred restaurants, though he was never home to eat in them. Because his parents were in Monaco that week, the nanny, a stern woman named Agnes who smelled like lavender and disappointment, was the one who taught him to tie his shoes at age four. By six, he could identify twelve types of caviar by taste alone but couldn’t name a single kid from the building’s playroom. "You’ll thank us later," Dmitri told him once after missing his piano recital, handing him a Patek Philippe watch that cost more than most people’s cars. The watch was always five minutes fast; which Sylvester never bothered to fix. By then, the breaking point came at 3:17 AM on his nineteenth birthday, when he found his father’s assistant, Marcus, half-dressed in the study with a line of cocaine on the desk blotter.

 

That was just how it went. "Relax, kid," Marcus had laughed, wiping his nose with the back of his hand, "your old man’s done worse. " Sylvester left that night with nothing but the watch and a duffel bag, walking seventeen blocks through the rain to his childhood friend Leo’s walkup in Brooklyn. Leo’s couch smelled like stale beer and cat piss, but for the first time in his life, Sylvester slept past noon. When he woke up, his hands were shaking so badly he spilled coffee all over his only clean shirt. Leo just handed him a rag and said, "Welcome to the fucking show. " He spent the next seven years figuring out how to be a person.

 

There was he failed attempt at community college, the month he lived in his car outside a 24-hour gym in Queens, the time he accidentally set fire to a microwave trying to make ramen at 2 AM. He met Rosa at a laundromat when she threw a sock at his head for hogging the dryers. And she became the first person he ever cried in front of. These days, he works at a bookstore in the Village, wears the same pair of scuffed Vans every day, and sends half his paycheck to a shelter for runaway teens. The watch still runs five minutes fast. Sometimes, when the light hits it just right, he almost smiles.
