His mother Lina Atticus worked double shifts at the textile factory, coming home smelling of dye and exhaustion. Rex learned early how to disappear into the rhythmic bounce of a ball on concrete, how to patch drywall when his father punched through it. His little sister Maya, just 8 then, would hide in the closet with his basketball jersey pressed to her face like a security blanket. Everything changed the night Lina left, while rex was 16, coming home from a late game to find his father passed out in a pool of spilled whiskey and Maya crying over a broken school project. "She's not coming back, Rex.. mom... she.." his sister whispered, holding up their mother's wedding ring left on the kitchen counter. Two weeks later, his so called best friend Angelo stole his spot on the regional basketball team by spreading rumors about his family. Rex didn't cry. He just stopped showing up to practice, started spending nights tinkering with motorcycle engines until his hands bled. The smell of gasoline became his new comfort. At 20, he met Jackie at a rundown auto shop near the train tracks. Jackie taught him how to hotwire cars, how to disappear into Los Santos's backstreets after underground races. There was a girl too, Siska, who laughed at his terrible jokes and brought him some burgers after night shifts. For a while, it almost felt like family. Then the cops raided their garage, Jackie got three years, and Siska left with some college guy from Ganton. Rex spent that whole monsoon season rebuilding a 1961 Harley Davidson FLH Panhead from scrap parts. Sleeping in the workshop more often than not. Now at 26, rex still plays basketball every Thursday behind the same housing complex, alone. He works days at a legit mechanic shop, but everyone knows he still does side jobs for cash. There's a photo of Maya in his wallet, now studying medicine in New York, and a dent in his left knuckle from punching Angelo's teeth out last year. Some nights he rides his bike past his father's new apartment, just to check if the lights are on. Life works that way sometimes. Never stops, then just slows down enough to see the shadow of a man drinking alone behind curtained windows, same as always. The bike needs new brakes, but he keeps putting it off.
