It was August 12, 2004, sticky hot in the back of Mr as chen’s bodega three blocks from their apartment in Bed-Stuy. His mom, laToya, was working the overnight shift at the hospital again, his dad, marcus, was god knows where, probably shooting dice behind the auto shop. Jamichael pocketed a pack of Starbursts just to see if he could. When his little sister Keisha ratted him out later, marcus laughed and called him a "natural. " That was the problem, really. Approval came too easy when you did the wrong thing right. Everything changed the night Jamichael turned fifteen. He came home to find LaToya crying over an eviction notice, marcus long gone with the rent money. "Ain’t no man in this house," she screamed, throwing a glass that shattered near his feet. He left before sunrise, slept on his cousin Rico’s couch for two weeks. Rico ran with the Crown Heights Kings, had gold teeth and a. 38 tucked in his waistband like it was part of his outfit, while "You wanna eat? Earn," Rico said, tossing him a bag of weed to move. Jamichael sold it all by noon as the rush was better than candy. By seventeen, he had a rep and a rap sheet. There was that time he got jumped by three dudes from the Linden projects. Came home with a busted lip and stolen Jordans. His boy Deon patched him up with vodka and paper towels, laughing about how stupid he looked. Then there was Tasha, the girl from the beauty school who swore she could change him. She lasted six months before taking the bus back to Philly. "You love this shit more than me," she said, then he didn’t argue. The streets were predictable. People weren’t as now at nineteen, his days start at 2 PM if he’s lucky. There’s always someone needing something,Terrell with the fake IDs, miss Pam with her "borrowed" EBT card, the youngins looking for clout. He holds court outside the fried chicken spot on Fulton, holding a lukewarm Arizona tea like it’s a mic. The girls call him J-Ham, the old heads call him trouble, and at night, when the texts stop coming, he stares at the water stain on his ceiling and wonders when Rico’s gonna call in that favor he owes. By then, the Crown Heights Kings want him to put in work uptown. Easy money, they say, then but Jamichael’s been counting cops on his block lately, noticing how his mom’s hands shake when she hears sirens. Keisha’s sixteen now, bringing home report cards with A’s he never got. That was just how it went. He keeps a folded picture of her in his sock, right next to the knife he’s never used. Someone’s gonna come asking soon. He’ll have to choose. Or maybe the choice will be made for him.
