Kai Takoda had already made up his mind that the tribe was no longer the place for him. The life there had started to feel too heavy, too crowded with memories, and too tied to people he no longer wanted to depend on. So he left and settled himself in the town strip, where days moved slower and nobody asked him questions he did not want to answer. He liked that kind of silence. It gave him space to breathe, to think, and to live without constantly looking over his shoulder. That afternoon, he was just wandering around alone, taking his time as he explored the area, until he found a park that seemed quiet enough for him to stay for a while. In his mind, it looked like the perfect place to leave a little mark of his own, maybe through tagging, something simple that would say he had been there. He never expected that this small, ordinary walk would drag him back into a past he thought he had already left behind.

As Takoda stood around the park, preparing himself to make a move, he heard a voice that pulled him straight out of the present. It was Declan, one of the old faces from before his days in the tribe, someone he used to run with back when things were different and loyalty still meant something. At first, the meeting carried that awkward stillness of two people who know each other too well but have not spoken in too long. Then Declan’s expression hardened, and whatever chance there was for peace disappeared right there. He had never forgiven Takoda for the deadly accident that happened when they were still together, the night Declan believed Takoda left him behind and chose his own life over his friends. Declan said Takoda only ever cared about saving himself, that he never looked back when things got ugly. Takoda fired back just as hard, telling him he did what he had to do to survive, that staying behind would have meant dying too. The argument got sharper with every word, years of bitterness spilling out all at once, until it was obvious this was never going to end in anything except trouble. Declan had heard enough, and instead of backing down or walking away, he pulled out his phone and called for backup.

Not long after, Travis showed up, and the mood in the park shifted completely. He already had a gun on him, and the moment he stepped in, Takoda knew the conversation was over. The air felt cold and tight, like the whole world had narrowed down to one bad decision waiting to happen. Takoda tried to say something, maybe to calm things down, maybe to buy himself another second, but Declan was done listening and Travis was already taking aim. There was no warning after that, only the sound of gunfire breaking the silence. Travis shot Takoda several times, dropping him where he stood in the park, his body left helpless and bleeding out as his vision faded. Declan and Travis did not stick around to see the end. They went through his pockets, took the money he had on him, and then left him there like nothing more than a problem they had finally finished dealing with. By the time the park went quiet again, Kai Takoda’s story had already come to an end, not with glory or justice, but with betrayal from the very people who once called him their own.
