He started by being a lookout, earning a few dollars for his silence, and soon progressed to holding small stashes of goods that were not his own. It was a dangerous game, but in his world, it was a familiar path to a scrap of respect and a few bills to ease the burden on his grandmother. The bad habit that truly set him apart, however, was his unpredictable and explosive temper, a trait that many attributed to his absent father. One afternoon, a dispute over a borrowed bicycle escalated quickly. A boy from a neighboring block, older and bigger, had taken Terrel’s cousin’s bike. When Terrel confronted him, words were exchanged, and the older boy shoved him to the ground. Something snapped. Instead of retreating, Terrel grabbed a loose brick from a nearby crumbling wall and struck the boy across the face, shattering his cheekbone and knocking out two teeth. The sound of the impact and the subsequent screaming drew a crowd. The police were called, and Terrel, only eleven years old, was taken into juvenile custody for the first time. This incident cemented his reputation, not just as a runner, but as someone unpredictable, a label that made him both useful and feared. It was in the juvenile detention center that he was also diagnosed with sickle cell trait, a genetic condition common in African-American communities, a silent reminder of his heritage that could cause him sudden, debilitating pain during times of extreme stress or physical exertion. After his release, the whispers of being an “informant” started. A rival crew, looking for leverage, spread the false rumor that Terrel had given up names to get a lighter sentence. Whether anyone truly believed it didn’t matter, the accusation was a death sentence on the streets. His own crew began to look at him with suspicion, and the older men who once gave him orders now saw him as a liability. The trust he had spent years building evaporated overnight. Fearing for his life, his grandmother, with tears in her eyes, made the only call she could. She contacted a distant cousin who lived in Los Santos, a man who ran a quiet auto repair shop and wanted nothing to do with gang politics. Within a week, Terrel was on a Greyhound bus with a single duffel bag, his grandmother’s blessing, and a stern warning to never come back until he had a new life. He arrived in Los Santos with nothing but a scarred reputation, a genetic time bomb in his blood, and the grim understanding that a new city did not automatically grant a new beginning. He knew the habits that had defined him were hard to break, and he was prepared to do whatever it took to ensure his past did not become his future.
