   Derek Owen was born in Los Santos on January 1, 2006. He grew up in Idlewood, a neighborhood long known for its volatile weather. His father was a mechanic. His mother was a housewife who occasionally washed the neighbors' clothes to supplement the family income. From childhood, Derek was accustomed to his family's relatively meager financial situation. Most days, Derek spent more time on the streets than at home. Sometimes he played on dusty basketball courts, sometimes in narrow alleys or small shops at the end of the block. In fact, the corners of Idlewood felt like a second home. From there, Derek began to witness things that others considered dangerous, from teenage brawls, people selling illegal goods, to violent police patrols. All of this slowly began to shape Derek's way of thinking. For him, life in Idlewood wasn't about comfort, but about survival or defeat.

   As he entered adolescence, his life became increasingly complicated. Derek knew his parents wanted him to excel in school, hoping he could change his circumstances, or at least change his fate for the better, but his environment was pulling him in a different direction. Many of his friends lived on the streets and were often involved in crime, and Derek sometimes got involved too. From hanging out late at night, getting into petty fights, to occasionally delivering groceries to his parents. Sometimes Derek felt content, especially when he saw his mother come home exhausted after a hard day's work. That sight made him realize he couldn't continue living on the streets. He needed a reason to survive, at least for his parents.


   Days passed, and Derek was already 20 years old. At that time, Derek was thinking about starting his life over, trying to understand things, and looking for a new job to gain experience. Derek talked to his father about his desire to find a job, but his father initially disapproved, as it would require leaving home and being separated from others, worried that something might happen to Derek. Derek tried to promise his parents that he wouldn't bring it up, and they allowed him to go. Without much thought, Derek immediately applied for a position as a cashier at Verona Mall.
