Fredro "Dutch" Barksdale was born in County General Hospital on June 12th. He was raised in Ganton, living on Ganton Street Avenue for most of his childhood years. When he was young, he had everything he needed, but he wanted more. His head was turned by the glamour of music videos and he felt he wouldn't be happy until he had $90 trainers. His mother and dad couldn't afford them, so he started dealing – it was all around him on Ganton where he grew up. He began with cannabis in his early teens and by the time he was 16, he was selling class A drugs. The money started rolling in and he enjoyed the lifestyle. He suppose we were in a gang, but to him they were his childhood homies he loved them.
Guns were readily available and part of our day-to-day life. They were young and foolish, and a silly accident was bound to happen. One day, his friend was playing around with a gun, aiming it at me as a joke. He assumed it wasn't loaded but there was still a bullet in the chamber and when he pulled the trigger, he got shot in the head. He was terrified, as was he. He was rushed to hospital and the doctors discovered that the bullet had travelled only a few millimetres inside his skull – they thought that because it was from a replica air rifle, it hadn't made the impact a bullet from a real gun would have done. Amazingly, he was absolutely fine. After 24 hours he was discharged, with the bullet still in there – removing it may cause nerve damage, so it will probably be there for the rest of his life.
At the time, it didn't really bother him. In his world he often came into contact with danger and he'd learned to let it wash over him. He felt fine and within days he was back on the streets. Instead of seeing my gunshot wound as a warning about his precarious lifestyle, he chose to carry on as usual. He felt that he was living the high life. His parents have strong moral values and were very shocked when they discovered what he'd been up to, but I didn't give it a second thought.
With hindsight, he realise that the future held only two options for him: death or jail. Fortunately, his fate was the latter. Aged 17, he was in south los santos in Ganton area, when he turned 17 earlier this month, he played a major role in a drug ring that sold as much as $20,000 worth of high-grade marijuana a month to fellow students in and around his well-to-do suburb.
