Hamid Hafez was born on August 30 2007, in a stuffy middle room of a cramped house in the Las Collinas district, as heavy rain pounded the tin roof that night. His father, Aaron, worked odd jobs sometimes as a construction laborer, sometimes as a parking attendant but more often disappeared for days at a time. His mother, Skylar, sold fried snacks in front of an elementary school, coming home each evening with burn marks from hot oil on her arms. They had three children Hamid was the middle child, sandwiched between his older brother Ryan, who loved to brawl, and his younger sister Lisa, who rarely left their mother's side. Everything changed when Hamid was sixteen. Ryan was stabbed to death over a gambling debt to a local thug, his body dumped in a small river near the railway tracks. The loss gutted the family Aaron drank more, Sarah went silent, and Hamid stopped going to school. It was around that time that Bahar, a gang leader who regularly bought Sarah's fried snacks, pulled Hamid in with a simple remark about his courage. Within two weeks, Hamid joined his first market raid, clutching a machete in his right hand while his left hand trembled.

 

The years that followed moved like a wheel that never stopped turning. Hamid learned stillness and patience from Bahar, though Ryan's hot-blooded nature still surfaced at times. He was once imprisoned for eight months after slashing someone, and he came out with a new tattoo on his back and a contact named Aldyno a fellow inmate who introduced him to the business of stolen goods. His first venture failed when police raided a warehouse in Cakung, forcing him to flee across rooftops until his leg broke from the fall. Aldyno gave him another chance, this time involving container trucks at the port. By now, Hamid carried two phones one for Yuny, his girlfriend who worked at a hair salon, and another for the dealings that left Yuny quietly anxious.

 

His days had settled into a quiet, deliberate rhythm. He woke at five in the morning, showered with cold water, and had breakfast at a familiar stall run by Mrs. Eno, who seemed to know everything but chose to say nothing. He would drop Yuni off at the salon each morning with a brief kiss on her forehead, unhurried and without ceremony. By midday, he met with associates at a local soup stall to discuss upcoming shipments. By evening, he sat across from a nineteen-year-old with bright, eager eyes a new recruit he was tasked with evaluating. Sometimes, in the quiet of three in the morning, he would wake up and think of a promise he once made to Ryan about buying Lisa a pair of shoes. Lisa was now studying at a university in Los Santos, receiving money from him every month, never knowing where it came from. In the drawer of his desk sat an old photograph of the three of them as children a drawer Hamid rarely opened.
